Death by Lunges

After 3 or 4 weeks of working out on my own, it was time for my monthly training session with my personal trainer. I had done fairly well on keeping up with my workouts, Thanksgiving messed up my routine a lil bit, but overall I’m happy with my workouts.

My trainer seems to be upping the ante every time I see her. She laid the foundation with the weight machines and today she really made me work hard. We moved from the weight machines to free weights, which I was actually pretty excited about. Most of the blogs I read utilize a lot of free weight exercises, so I know I’m finally able to do some of those. Free weight exercises are pretty intimidating. You really have to know what you’re doing and make sure you’re keeping proper form. While I’ve read a lot of blog posts with workout ideas, I was always afraid to try them because I wanted to make sure my form was correct.

My trainer wanted to make sure my form was correct. For some of the exercises we used less weight to ensure I got the movements right and then upped them as we went along.

I did the following workout:

3 sets of 10 reps:

  • chest press
  • One arm dumbbell rows
  • overhead shoulder press
  • overhead tricep extension
  • standing lunges
  • crunch twist
  • plank for 3 sets of 20 seconds
  • balance on bosu ball with squat

So I may have laughed my way through the overhead shoulder press. apparently when I watched my arms go up and tried to touch the weights together I missed, not really sure why. When I just looked straight ahead in the mirror they touched without trying. Strange and hilarious. My trainer also joined in on the laughing.

I made the mistake of telling my trainer that my balance skills are lacking, so out came the bosu ball. It took a lil while for me to be able to stand on the ball, but after I got the hang of it she also made me do squats, I almost fell countless times.

This girl is wayyyy better than me.

Lunges have always been a struggle for me, this time was no different. This is where my lack of balance kicks in and I almost always fall over. I was pretty much dying and my legs are killing me, but I know that those will help tone my legs, so I just have to stick with it.

We ended the workout by going over everything and talking about my goals. I’ve maintained my weight, but in all honesty I wouldn’t mind losing some pounds. I don’t want to be super skinny, I want to be healthy and there are a few areas that still need work. So basically to meet these goals I need to put in more effort, so let’s hope I can get myself to the gym more. I really hate cardio but I have to do it.
